Pet loss: the disenfranchised grief

Having to say goodbye to a beloved pet can cause an enormous amount of grief because for many of us, our pets are more than just a cute animal sharing the same space as us- they’re family. Yet, the pain endured in the aftermath of pet loss is often overlooked by society, and openly grieving a deceased pet is not always publicly supported. Even worse, many of those who are grieving the loss of a pet are directly or indirectly given the message that their grief is overblown, inappropriate, or that they should just “get over it” quickly and move on. This can further compound the grief, and can leave the bereaved feeling isolated and alone.

First and foremost, I want you to know that you are not alone. I created this group to provide a safe space to learn, process, and give/receive support to and from others who know firsthand the difficulties of losing a pet. By joining this group, you can expect the following:

  • To learn more about grief and it’s stages.

  • To gain a deeper understanding of why pet loss elicits such an intense level of grief.

  • The normalization of grief in the aftermath of pet loss.

  • To have a safe space to process your experience.

  • To be surrounded by others who have also experienced pet loss.
